Equipment Is Installed at the Engine Plant for the Production of R6

14 March 2017

The engine plant ot KAMAZ PTC (part of Rostec State Corporation) has started installing equipment to produce a completely new type of engine - the R6 in-line "six-cylinder engine".

The design phase of producing a new engine is coming to an end, and the enterprise has begun installing equipment. According to Fyodor Nazarov, Chief Engineer of the engine plant, a total of 14 contracts are signed for the supply of equipment. "We tried to choose only high-quality, mainly European manufacturers (Germany, Serbia, England, Austria, Italy)," Nazarov said. "This year, more than 60 units of the state-of-the-art and high-tech equipment are to arrive. They will be equipped with a system of traceability and video surveillance."

Special foundations are required for equipment installation, so the engine plant is currently carrying out large-scale construction works. Now four sections are under construction, there will be placed large block and cylinder block processing lines, engine assembly, jointing and painting lines. In Workshop 116, at the cylinder block section, the construction work has already been completed. The foundations were received by a special commission fr om the equipment supplier. There is also a planned installation and launch of part of the Heckert equipment received in February, the work is carried out by the installation supervisors from Germany. In total, seven processing centers will be installed in this sector this year. This will be a comprehensive line for machining, subassembling and testing of cylinder blocks. The line will also have two machines already available at the factory. According to Vladimir Barinov, Project Manager, cylinder blocks weighing 25 kg are cast-iron, therefore manual labor at this site will be minimized.

Construction works are completed on the site where the line for assembly of the new engine will be located. The equipment for it is now going to the plant and will start to be mounted in March. Construction works on the cylinder block line and jointing line are still ongoing. A particularly large amount of work is to be done in the place wh ere the engine painting line will be located. It is noteworthy that it will be used not only for R6 engines, but for all manufactured KAMAZ engines and Cummins. The delivery of equipment for these two lines is expected in March-April. The main task of the year is to put out 200 prototypes of engines from the new assembly line. This will make it possible to check the stability of all processes so that next year it will be possible to switch to mass production.
