A NEW LIFE FOR OLD CENTRIFUGES

5 April 2018

Continuous centrifuges are being restored at the engine plant of KAMAZ PTC.

This activity is related to emerging violations of GOST requirements to delivered aluminum shavings: they arrived at the foundry with a moisture content exceeding 10%. The checkup of the installations revealed several causes of the problem – wear and tear of Permolex-Polar continuous centrifuges, a low air temperature, a great volume of shavings in a drum.

A special group gathered to eliminate these violations installed an additional mill for compressed shavings, modernized a worm gear for diminishing feed of shavings, delivered additional heating elements for better drying.

The further work required joint efforts of the special group, a laboratory of manufacturing accuracy and a design-engineering department. They developed drawings of a device for the drum, made its parts and tool holding fixtures. Besides, 840 holes were drilled, and bushes were put into them. To process the surface of the drum, it was decided to use a radial-type drill press and abrasive tools. It took about ten days to restore one centrifuge.

The device made after such efforts is unique, no enterprise has such a device. It enabled to simplify work, save time and improve the quality of the processed surface. It will be used during a repair of the rest eight centrifuge drums.
