New Step towards Import Substitution

26 July 2017

The industrial batch of new localized floor carpets for KAMAZ-5490 and KAMAZ-65206, -65207 trucks was delivered to the new cab assembly site of KAMAZ's automobile plant (part of Rostec State Corporation). The company has taken one more step towards replacing imported products with domestic counterparts.

The new floor carpet has become an alternative to the products by the company Daimler whose supplies will cease in October. The first carpets have already been used in 36 cabs. This event was preceded by a lot of work started at the beginning of the year.

"It was then that a Russian supplier whose products are similar to those of the Daimler manufacture and who comply with the requirements of the foreign company. This is a wear-resistant cover with noise-absorbing properties and aesthetic appearance," explained Andrey Elin, Chief Procurement Expert of the Cab Localization project.

The selection of the supplier was followed by the purchase of two test kits for trial assembly. Russian carpets passed necessary tests in the laboratories of the R&D Center of KAMAZ and in the laboratory of non-metallic materials of the Technological Center. They were tested for frost resistance at -45°C, fire resistance, heat resistance at a temperature of +80°C, oil resistance, grain stretching and sound absorption. As a result, a positive conclusion was received for commissioning.

The new product is made of polyurethane foam covered with a layer of durable artificial leather according to the Skin Spray modern technology. It has good sound-absorbing properties and aesthetic appearance. In the autumn, serial shipments of carpets will begin. Now the nominated supplier is engaged in expanding production to ensure full import substitution and uninterrupted supply.

The main purpose of localization is the Russian manufacture of products the quality of which should not be inferior to imported ones. This makes production flexible, reduces dependence on imported suppliers, fluctuations in exchange rates, transport force majeure and other losses.
