Will Moscow Switch over to KAMAZ Electric Buses?

9 August 2017

A Moscow Government Presidium Meeting was held With the participation of representatives of KAMAZ (part of Rostec State Corporation) to replace diesel buses by electric buses.

According to Sergey Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow, technical design specifications for electric buses will be finalized already at the end of this year, when the first tender for their purchase will be announced. From 2021, only electric buses will be purchased for Moscow's fleet. It is planned to completely replace buses running on motor fuel by eco-friendly and high-quality electric buses.

Sergey Afanasyev, Deputy General Director of KAMAZ PTC for Sales and Service, who attended the meeting of the presidium, noted that KAMAZ supported the capital in its striving to make the city transport environmentally friendly and at the same time highly mobile. "Previously, a prototype electric bus of our production was undergoing operational tests in Moscow for two months, also as part of Mosgortrans' fleet - it was running on a real route with passengers and showed good results," he reminded. Mr. Afanasyev also stressed that the demands that the metropolitan government makes on electric buses can be successfully taken into account by manufacturing on the basis of KAMAZ's facilities in the near future.

Over the last two and a half years several models of electric buses, including prototypes of KAMAZ vehicles, have been tested on the roads of the Russian capital. As a result of the tests, KAMAZ specialists received all the necessary data to refine the model and plan to submit their proposals for the final version of the technical specification of the Moscow electric bus.

The KAMAZ-6282 electric bus is adapted for low-mobility passengers, has a low floor, is equipped with video cameras and satellite navigation. The total capacity of the salon is 85 passengers. The batteries are charged from an electrical network with a voltage of 380 volts. The power reserve on one 20-minute charge is 100 kilometers. The maximum speed is 65 km/h. The electric bus can be operated at temperatures up to -30 degrees Celsius.
